A hardware component of a system, which is designated for configuration
management to the integrity of the delivered product. It may exist at any level
in the system hierarchy, since configuration management must be imposed down to
the lowest level where item interchangeability is required. Each HWCI is to have
(as appropriate) individual design reviews, individual qualification
certification, individual Acceptance Reviews, and separate operator and
maintenance manuals.
