In addition to transfer files, this is the other general
technique used in the integration of information processing systems. Database
integration makes it possible for several applications to share a common
database. Information located on the database of one software application
can be accessed, where applicable, from other applications. In
practice, other applications often read the database through a so-called
programming interface (API Application Programming Interface). The database
services, which the application in question offers to external applications,
are defined in the software interface.
