Een momentopname (bij de start of tussentijds) van een project, die wordt vastgelegd om de originele positie te kunnen vergelijken met latere posities.
Ook producten die een kwaliteitsreview hebben doorstaan en zijn goedgekeurd kunnen worden gebaselined. Iedere Baseline dient te vallen onder versiebeheer als onderdeel van configuratiemanagement en worden 'bevroren'. M.a.w. wijzigen in de 'gebaselinde' versie is niet toegestaan.

Een specificatie of softwareproduct dat formeel is beoordeeld of
overeengekomen en daarna dient als basis voor verdere ontwikkeling, en dat
alleen gewijzigd kan worden middels een formeel wijzigingsproces.

A planning and control instrument in the form of a summary of attributes such as
quantity, quality, timing, costs, etc, that establishes a formal reference for
comparison and verification of subsequent efforts, progress, analysis and
control. Can be for project, business or technical management control.
