Sellen has determined that there are three general mechanisms for detecting
errors -- action-based, outcome-based, and limiting functions. Outcome-based
detection relies on a comparison of the manifested outcome with the expected
outcome or with familiar error patterns. Aiding the search for familiar error
patterns seems to be the primary strategy behind Shingo's self-check poka-yoke
devices.
